Transportation

Hyatt Regency Perth, located on the picturesque Swan River, is within walking distance of Perth's central business, retail and entertainment district. The 5 star hotel is closely situated to Perth's major sporting venues and tourist attractions, including championship 18-hole golf courses and some of the world's finest beaches. The perfect place to discover a cosmopolitan yet unspoilt city, vibrant with opportunity and ideal for business and pleasure.

Guest services include a complimentary morning shuttle to the city (weekdays).

Driving in the Outback
Venture into The the outback, a short driveaway from Perth's CBD, towards some of Australia's most spectacular scenery. Take a short daytrip or overnight roadtrips into Swan Valley or Margaret River where you’ll find WA’s finest wineries, chocolate factories and dairy farms that are well worth visiting. Its size, climate and the sparseness of its population can, however, result in hazardous driving conditions. When driving in the outback, detailed background knowledge and proper equipment are essential.

The best time for outback travel is during the drier, cooler months between April and October. Plan your trip with the aid of a reputable map, stay on recognised routes and check facilities and road conditions before departure. Road conditions must be confirmed with local authorities and weather forecasts and fuel availability checked at every opportunity. Tell someone your route, destination and intended time of arrival, and ask them to notify the police if you do not contact them by an agreed time. The car should be in good condition. Two spare tyres are essential, and all wheel-changing equipment should be checked.

Refuel at every opportunity. Ensure all essential supplies are on board: water, food, first-aid kit, fuel, spare parts, detailed maps and one week's extra supply of food and water (at least 20 litres per person) in case of emergency. Drink water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty, and stop and refresh yourself at regular intervals to prevent fatigue. Motorists must always remain with the vehicle if it breaks down and should seek local advice before embarking on their journey.

Conditions
Australia has a good system of well-maintained roads, and hiring a car is one of the best ways to see the country. However, special precautions must be taken when driving in rural areas or the outback.

Route Planning
Standard international signs relate information and warnings on all Australian roads. Distances between towns, particularly away from the coast, can be deceptive, and it is important to take this into account when planning a long journey.

Urban Driving
The speed limit in built-up areas is 60 kph (35 mph). Traffic circles (roundabouts) are widely used at intersections in Australia, and cars already in the circle have the right of way. Driving laws vary from state to state and city to city, so it is recommended that you pick up a copy of the Australian Road Rules from the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) in Perth.

Tolls
Tolls do not have to be paid on any of Australia's main interstate highways.

Disabled Drivers
A number of car-hire companies in Australia provide vehicles suitable for travellers with disabilities. Inform the company in advance about the nature of the disability so that special arrangements can be made.

Services

Breakdowns
When driving a rented car, contact the rental company, who will arrange appropriate breakdown service. Alternatively, most petrol stations will be able to assist, or at least direct you to the nearest repair centre. The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS) provides emergency services to outback travellers. For general information and a list of RFDS bases throughout Australia, contact the Australian Council of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia in Sydney.
